“Subspecies” is first of all a potential for multiplicity. A focus on phenotypes and the frameworks that shape them rather than their genotypes.

After a first period of activity between 2012 and 2015 in Marseille as an instrumental ensemble, the company was reactivated in 2020 at the initiative of composer and bassist David Merlo.

He brings together different artistic, scientific and musical practices around sound and visual forms which question our ability to thwart or circumvent the injunctions to predation that an ultra-liberal society places on the individual and the collective.

Drawing on amplified, acoustic, electroacoustic, improvised and written music, these forms aim to divert tools and languages to make them suitable for hybridization and put them at the service of new species and subspecies of sound.

It is towards the invention and formulation of new imaginations and stories, organized around the notions of symbiosis and egalitarian common actions that the company focuses its energy. With the sound wave as the main experimental material and transmission vector.

C’est vers l’invention et la formulation de nouveaux imaginaires et récits, organisés autour des notions de symbiose et d’actions communes égalitaires que la compagnie concentre son énergie. Avec l’onde sonore comme principal matériau d’expérimentation et vecteur de transmission.
